The Distinguished
Gentleman’s Ride
23 May 2021
Since 2016, the DGR community in over 1000 cities worldwide have helped raise over AUD $34 million for Movember programs. As our partnership enters its sixth year, we are excited by the prospect of funding incredible projects to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives. The last twelve months has been a challenging year for everyone, and despite all the hurdles and restrictions more than 56,000 participants, across 171 countries united behind men’s health and rode solo raising AUD $4 million for Movember. As we maintain that momentum, and shift to our new date in May, this year’s event will focus on celebrating ten years of the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.
How it all started
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in 2012 by Mark Hawwa in Sydney, Australia, after being inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike, wearing his finest suit.
It was decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together.
That first ride brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities, with the success of the event encouraging Mark to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. The rest, as they say, is eloquently attired history.
A match made in heaven
Movember has been the official charity partner of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride since 2016. Both organisations share one simple common goal: giving more life to our fathers, sons, brothers and friends.
This year, we’ll celebrate the sixth anniversary of our joint partnership between DGR and Movember as we begin to implement programs aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of men in those communities.
In 2020, we created two landmark funding opportunities that serve as an investment to further our goals. The Veterans and First Responders program will trial new ideas to support firefighters, paramedics, police officers and military veterans who are all disproportionately affected by poor mental health.
While The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride Social Connections Challenge will road test new ideas that bring motorcycle riders together and improve their social connections which, in turn, enables them to enjoy healthier, happier and longer lives.
